The Painted Veil. Who live call it Life!

“The Painted Veil. Who live call it life!” (Maughn)

Inspired by the classic book and movie, "The Painted Veil.
    by W Somerset Maughn.

A story of becoming awakened to truth!
Mixed Media with gold leaf and various gold paint.
  30 x 40 Inches

Actor Edward Norton became involved with the project in 1999.  Norton discussed why he liked the project.

"It's very much a story about people getting beyond the worst in themselves and figuring out how to look at each other honestly, forgive each other for their failings and get to a better place...When I read it, I was very affected by it because in it I saw my own failings." Wikipedia

As I continued to paint this painting, a transformation took place on the canvas.  I pressed on applying gold and jewel like strokes of paint.  The object of truth became the maiden of Song of Songs.  Turning away from selfishness and being.... black but comely... she was becoming the Church, the Bride of Christ.  The beautiful maiden became the reflection of the Beloved.  Sins were washed away.  Transformation had taken place and the eternal rather than the temporal was shown in this painting: The Painted Veil.

W-HOLY GRAFITTI: Paradise in Blue

 W-HOLY GRAFITTI:   "PARADISE IN BLUE"

Spring is in the air and Marketplace Gallery in Trinidad, Colorado is celebrating the change of season with the vision of birds.

And, in response to the bird quest of Spring, this large painting is  orchastrated as one, but using two canvases joined. A DIPTYCH painting.   I played with the title in what I call "W-Holy Grafitti," reflecting the name  of my Facebook art page W-Holy Artists.  Arise!

I have been inspired  with the grafitti like paitings of Jean-Michel Basquiat  His work is classified as Neo-expressionism and  Primitivism.  He was born December 22, 1960 but died August 12, 1988.

Such a short life.  Yet his work is studied today and seen in New York galleries.    He used his grafitti and arwork to get his message across.

As a Christian, I too, want to get my message across.

Basquiat has inspired me  so much that I am playing with the idea of inserting, in some of my work, the rough proclaimations of my own grafitti.  The  writing of  exhortation, cries and praise phrases and meaningful words that sing in my heart.  I am enjoying  the quest!
